Dear Visitors and Friends,
behalf of the Somali Bantu Community Mutual Assistance Association (SBCMALA), and as the President of the organization, it
is a personal delight to welcome
you to our website.
SBCMALA is a 501©3 non-profit
organization dedicated to assisting the Somali Bantu refugee community with transitional issues related to renting safe and
affordable housing, finding employment, accessing educational resources, and developing effective programming to address the
needs of our growing Somali Bantu community here in Maine. We hope the information and material provided here will leave you with a better
understanding and appreciation of the community. We
warmly welcome all your comments, questions and suggestions for improvement. We continue
to build an integrated and strong community of people who respect and care for one another.
Since 2005, SBCMALA has worked tirelessly to help give refugees the skills and
education they need to find employment. Bantu people are incredibly driven to find work. They seek economic independence.
English language classes have been incredibly valuable to the people who’ve participated in themThey put all their resources together and started offering basic services for the Somali Bantu new arrivals. We're
grateful for support from other organizations in Lewiston, including Maine Community Foundation, Haymarket Fund, New England
Grassroots Fund, Resist, Bates College, and other non-profit organizations. We welcome community partners and individuals interested in
volunteering or working with us to continue to provide transitional services to families in need.
